Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central’s goal is always to streamline your workflow, and I believe these improvements reflect that commitment. I encourage you to dive in, explore its capabilities, and enjoy the improved workflow it brings.

This update is a testament to Microsoft commitment to a coherent, user-friendly, and efficient experience in Dynamics 365 Business Central. Learn more about new enhancements in the Wave 1 below.

As a disclaimer, I must mention that I have not yet personally tested these features. Nonetheless, the theoretical benefits are clear, and Microsoft anticipate a positive impact on our service delivery capability.

Timesheet Approval process

I'm excited to share with you some of the latest enhancements Microsoft has rolled out in Dynamics 365 Business Central, specifically within our Timesheet Approval process.

Firstly, Microsoft has introduced an option that allows you to decide if empty timesheet lines should be submitted or not. This adds a layer of flexibility and ensures that you only process what's necessary.

Also Microsoft launched a new page titled 'Manager Time Sheets by Project'. This dedicated space is where you can oversee all timesheet entries associated with your projects in one glance. Plus, Microsoft has made it so that the project description is now visible, providing you with immediate context.

One of the more significant changes is the 'Approve or Reject all lines' option. This means that with a single click, you can approve or reject all entries, drastically cutting down the time you spend on this task.

And finally, Microsoft has rethought the entire approval logic. Now, it’s a much more intuitive way to approve completed timesheets. You'll find that these changes not only save time but also reduce the possibility of errors.

I’m sure these improvements will make a noticeable difference in your day-to-day operations. Microsoft is not just enhancing a system; they are evolving a process to better serve your needs.

Service usability

Another exciting segment is the usability of Microsoft service modules in Dynamics 365 Business Central. Microsoft is all about creating seamless experiences and simplifying processes for Dyn365BC users. With this in mind, I'm pleased to present some key usability enhancements that you can start taking advantage of today.

Firstly, Microsoft has broadened the functionality of the Item Reference Number. You can now leverage this feature across our service management spectrum. This ensures consistency and ease when dealing with various service-related documents and entries.

Secondly, the External Document Number has seen a significant improvement. It now functions as anticipated, carrying over to ledger entries globally, not just in Norway.

Moving on, Microsoft has given you more control with the introduction of the Bill-to as well as the Customer Number on service contract lists. This feature is available through personalization, allowing you to tailor the information displayed according to your specific needs.

Now, some of you might ask, "Why include both Customer Number and Bill-to Customer Number in Service Management?" Well, it's about providing you with options. Different businesses have different needs. Including both these fields allows businesses that need this level of detail to have it at their fingertips.

To wrap up, N.Progression is excited to see how these enhancements will support you in delivering even greater service to your customers.

Service – Attachments

Let’s unveil another layer of our continuous efforts to enhance Dynamics 365 Business Central and talk about a feature that’s crucial for keeping all our service-related information in one place – the 'Service – Attachment Attachments'.

You’ve all experienced the convenience of attaching documents directly to sales and purchase orders. It’s a feature that has become indispensable to our daily operations. Microsoft has taken the best parts of that experience and extended it to the service module.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 BC in Wave 1 added the same user-friendly document attachment factbox to service orders that you've been utilizing in sales and purchase modules. This means you can now attach and manage documents in the service module with the same efficiency and ease.

But it’s not just about attaching files; Microsoft has also implemented smart logic that determines which documents are carried over and when. This ensures that only the relevant attachments follow the service item throughout its lifecycle, reducing clutter and keeping focus where it belongs: on servicing our customers.

I know there might be some concerns: Is this feature as swift as it needs to be, or is Microsoft still reliant on ISV extensions? Rest assured, Microsoft has worked diligently to ensure that the performance of this feature meets high standards, but Microsoft is also maintaining the flexibility for those who wish to continue using ISV extensions.

And perhaps the most significant benefit is consistency. With this update, whether you’re in sales, purchase, or service, the method of attaching and managing documents is now uniform across the board. This consistency reduces learning curves and streamlines our processes.

Service – Block Items & Variants

In our continuous quest to harmonize operations across Dynamics 365 Business Central, Microsoft has introduced a significant update aimed at enhancing control within our service management: the 'Service – Block Items & Variants' feature.

In line with the uniformity established in the sales and purchase modules, Microsoft has now made it possible to set restrictions at the Item Card or Variant level within our service transactions. This means you have the ability to mark specific items or variants as blocked, which will automatically filter them out of the item list on service transactions.

This granular level of control ensures that items that should not be serviced — whether due to discontinuation, lack of parts, or any other reason — are not inadvertently processed. It's about ensuring accuracy and preventing errors before they can occur.

Moreover, the interface will look familiar to those of you who have utilized blocking functionalities in other areas of Business Central. This consistent user experience reduces the learning curve and allows for an intuitive understanding of service management tasks.

It’s essential to note that these restrictions are not just blanket blocks. They are nuanced, allowing items to be blocked for sales while still available for other processes, or vice versa. This level of detail extends to service management, where an item can be blocked specifically for service transactions, ensuring that your inventory and service offerings are perfectly aligned.

As you explore this new feature, you'll find that it not only streamlines your workflows but also reinforces the integrity of your service management system. By implementing these blocks, you're proactively managing your inventory and customer expectations, leading to better service and more efficient operations.

Field Service Integration

This feature represents a significant leap in connecting projects and resources, creating a streamlined and cohesive experience. With this integration, you’ll find it seamless to link across to Projects & Resources within Business Central.

An exciting aspect of this integration is the visibility of inventory availability directly from Business Central. You can view what's in stock and readily available as you manage field service operations, ensuring that your projects are not delayed by inventory surprises.

As you integrate, you are adding the necessary items to your projects, simplifying the process of resource allocation and planning. This automatic addition of items is just one of the many ways Microsoft is working to make your day-to-day operations more efficient.

It's important to understand that this integration implies that data flows are primarily one-way. However, there is an assisted setup to guide you through the integration process, making it as straightforward as possible.

Please note that this integration does not replicate the service module as it currently exists in Business Central. Instead, it enhances it by connecting the field service management aspects more directly with your resource planning and project management capabilities.

N.Progression is excited about the possibilities this integration brings and are eager to see how it will improve our customer’s field service operations.

Salesperson on Ship-to Address functionality

Let’s dive into a feature that enhances the customization and flexibility of Dynamics 365 Business Central — specifically geared towards improving sales processes: the 'Salesperson on Ship-to Address' functionality.

This feature is particularly perfect for large companies with multiple branches or retailers. It allows each branch or retailer to be associated with a local salesperson or agent. This means that the service and attention your clients receive are personalized and managed locally, which is a huge benefit for maintaining strong customer relationships.

One of the key aspects of this feature is its subtlety and user-driven visibility. By default, the salesperson field is not visible on the ship-to address to maintain a clean interface. However, should you need it, an additional setting can be activated to make this option available.

If the salesperson field isn't populated on the ship-to address, the system intelligently defaults to the customer's primary salesperson. This ensures that there is always a clear point of contact for each transaction, simplifying the sales process and ensuring accountability.

A practical consideration for those of you involved in systems administration: you may be wondering about customization. With this update, consider whether you'll need to remove any customizations before or after the upgrade.

Package Tracking with Physical Inventory Orders

An exciting update that underscores Microsoft commitment to continual improvement and comprehensive inventory management in Dynamics 365 Business Central - new feature that closes a crucial loop in our system: Package Tracking with Physical Inventory Orders.

This feature is a game-changer for those who utilize package tracking. It must be enabled, which is as simple as flipping a switch, and come October 25th, it will be ready to transform the way you handle inventory recording.

The ability to track package numbers on recordings against physical inventory orders fills a critical need. For any business that relies on meticulous tracking to ensure accuracy and accountability, this feature will be indispensable.

If package tracking is a part of your operational process, you've likely felt the absence of this feature. But now, you can easily check package numbers directly within the physical inventory order interface, which brings a new level of precision to our inventory system. It's about connecting the dots, ensuring that every item, every package, is accounted for in a traceable and reliable manner.

Country of Origin via Tracking

One more essential update in Dynamics 365 Business Central — the 'Country of Origin via Tracking' feature.

As Microsoft globalize and diversify their sourcing, the importance of accurately recording the country of origin for items has become more apparent. Up until now, the Country of Origin has been set on the item card, which posed a significant challenge. For those of you who source the same item from different countries, this method was not just inadequate — it was incorrect.

While the feature is still in the works and we expect to preview it fully by May 24, the direction is clear. Microsoft is moving towards a system that will allow you to select the Country of Origin at the point of tracking receipt.

This development means that accuracy in our inventory management will be significantly improved. No longer will you have to contend with a one-size-fits-all approach to tracking where your items are sourced from. The system will soon reflect the complexities and nuances of our supply chain.

Customer Ledger Entries

A series of significant updates to the Customer Ledger Entries in Dynamics 365 Business Central are tailored to enhance the clarity and control you have over customer transactions and disputes.

Microsoft has introduced a new 'Dispute Status' field within the ledger entries. This is a substantial improvement that allows you to define specific codes and descriptions for various dispute scenarios. Unlike previous character limitations, this new field accommodates more detailed codes, exceeding the three-character standard, offering you the nuance required for complex dispute categorization.

Furthermore, the act of setting a dispute status can now trigger a 'hold flag' on the transaction. This means that you can instantly mark an entry that requires additional attention or action, streamlining the dispute management process and preventing the transaction from proceeding while in dispute.

Microsoft have also integrated an 'Editable Promised Payment Date' field. This feature gives you the flexibility to adjust payment dates as promises are made or renegotiated, allowing for more accurate forecasting and cash flow management.

It is important to note that these enhancements to the Customer Ledger Entries are specialized; they are not replicated on the Vendor Ledger Entries. This deliberate decision underscores our commitment to customizing functionalities to the specific needs of each ledger type.

The G/L Account Revaluations

Let’s walk you through a critical enhancement to the financial toolkit in Dynamics 365 Business Central — the G/L Account Revaluations.

This update is a game-changer for businesses operating with assets or liabilities in foreign currencies. It streamlines the process of reevaluating your General Ledger accounts to reflect the true value of these amounts in your base currency, ensuring your financial statements remain accurate and compliant.

It’s important to note that this feature requires activation — a one-way upgrade that could take some time. But once implemented, it’s mandatory by BC27, which rolls out on October 25th. This timeline gives us a clear path for adoption and integration into our financial operations.

Each account can be individually set for revaluation directly on the G/L Account Card, providing a tailored approach to managing your currency exposure. This flexibility is critical in today's global market, where exchange rates fluctuate constantly.

Microsoft has also introduced a new section specifically for Revaluation on the G/L Account Card. Here, you can manage revaluation settings for one or multiple currencies, offering a straightforward and centralized way to adjust for currency exchange movements.

The system is designed to be user-friendly, utilizing the Adjust Exchange Rate batch job you’re already familiar with, without the need for additional toggles or complications. This maintains the efficiency and usability of the system while expanding its capabilities.

Excel Reporting

Let’s continue our journey toward enhanced financial analysis and reporting within Dynamics 365 Business Central. Microsoft are officially initiating a transition to Excel Reporting.

Microsoft has introduced eight meticulously crafted Excel-based reports. These reports have been selected and designed to become a cornerstone of a reporting framework, especially in the 'Preview' phase. These new Excel reporting capabilities are more than just a feature—they are set to become a key part of the future of reporting within Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. Included in this rollout are pivotal reports such as:

  • The Trial Balance
  • The Trial Balance compared against Budgets
  • The Trial Balance measured against the Previous Year

These reports are foundational tools that every accountant should utilize for a precise and comprehensive financial analysis. Additionally, Microsoft has incorporated reports on Aged Receivables and Payables, which are also incredibly valuable for day-to-day financial management.

While these reports are not yet visible on the Report Explorer Page, Microsoft in Dyn365BC Wave 1 represents our proactive approach to financial management and our response to your needs for in-depth financial insight.

Lastly, I would like to address the frequent question regarding the focus on 'top customers & vendors'. It is crucial to recognize that these entities often significantly impact the financial health and strategy of a company. Understanding your major revenue and expenditure sources is essential for strategic decision making, risk management, and relationship optimization.

Also, Microsoft enhance capabilities for detailed analysis, fostering more informed decision-making, and providing you with the agility to respond to the financial dynamics of your business.

Sustainability Compliance

Let’s turn our focus to an area of increasing importance and legal significance – Sustainability Compliance within the European Union.

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) has reshaped the landscape of corporate accountability, mandating comprehensive sustainability reporting since its enforcement from January 2023. To align with these legal requirements, Microsoft has rolled out a robust Sustainability Ledger within Dynamics 365.

This ledger is a testament to a proactive approach in integrating sustainability into our financial ecosystem. Microsoft has established a dedicated Chart of Sustainability Accounts, ensuring that environmental considerations are at the forefront of our accounting practices.

However, you may notice a current absence of demo data, which Microsoft sees as a blank canvas upon which your company's unique sustainability narrative will be crafted. Microsoft provides you with the familiar structure of ledger pages, including:

  • Setup
  • Account Card
  • Journal
  • Recurring Journal
  • Ledger Entries

This is not merely about compliance; it's about embedding sustainability into the DNA of Microsoft’s operations. I invite you to engage deeply with the Sustainability Setup in Dynamics 365, to explore its potential, and to participate in a transformative process that brings sustainability to the forefront of Microsoft’s business intelligence.

User experience

A significant update that enhances the user experience within Dynamics 365 Business Central — access to worksheet pages from mobile phones.

Until now, worksheet functionality was limited to tablets or desktop environments, which provided a robust user experience but lacked the flexibility that modern professionals demand. Recognizing the critical need for access on-the-go, we have now extended this capability to mobile phones.

This rollout is not merely about accessibility; it’s about providing a seamless and cohesive user experience that mirrors the familiarity and efficiency of our desktop environment. The mobile version will feature a short header section, all worksheet lines, and a footer summary section, ensuring you have all the necessary information at your fingertips.

Whether you’re in the warehouse, on the shop floor, or stepping out of a client meeting, the power to access, review, and manage your worksheets is now in your pocket. This mobile accessibility is slated to become generally available in April 2024, paving the way for greater flexibility and productivity.

To conclude, I've embarked on a journey through a series of significant updates and enhancements to Dynamics 365 Business Central Wave 1 2024, aimed at propelling Microsoft ‘soperational efficiency, compliance, and user experience into a new era of digital transformation.
